No-Carb Bet: Food Log plus Updates

 In Diet, Props

Bales, Peter and I have embarked on a one-week no-carb bet. The stakes are a $1000 penalty per each offense. We are allowed to eat fruit even though they have carbs. For more details and background, please check out my previous post.

Each day I’ll post exactly what I ate and some other notes in this space.

DAY 1 Wednesday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 152.2 pounds

Food Log:
* 8am — Banana, strawberries, grapes
* 1030am — Peanuts, almond milk protein shake
* 1pm — Meat Wraps (deli sliced turkey wrapped in monterey jack cheese), blueberries
* 3pm — Plum
* 630pm — Two grilled tilapia filets, grilled vegetables (bell peppers, onions, squash)
* 915pm — Peanuts, strawberries, almond milk protein shake

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None as of 1020pm ET, but he is currently drunk.
Peter — None

Notes: Today was the first day of my entire life I didn’t eat some kind of bread carb. It’s a brave new world. I was hungry for a lot of the day,  think I just need to up my caloric volume. Overall, feel strong. … Peter said he had to caddie today (presumably for a bet) and walked 8 miles. “Got a salad and had to evade all the croutons.” He later added, “Guys I’m with ordered cheesesteak egg rolls which is top seller. They look amazing.” … Bales tried to get me to the bar for the Sixers. Drinking makes me so hungry and mentally weak, so I abstained.

DAY 2 Thursday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 150.8 pounds

Food Log:
* 730am — Banana, monterey jack cheese, blueberries
* 945am — Fruit smoothie with protein added (strawberries, bananas, greek yogurt, almond milk)
* 1015am — 3 scrambled eggs, grapes
* 2pm — Chopped salad with grilled chicken
* 615pm — Meatballs, cantaloupe, strawberries
* 8pm — 12oz filet, asparagus

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None
Peter — None

Notes: I went full carnivore today. Unborn chicken babies, grilled chicken, meatballs, steak — all creatures below me on the food chain have suffered.

DAY 3 Friday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 150.0 pounds

Food Log:
* 9am — Banana, monterey jack cheese, plum
* 1030am — Almond milk protein shake, peanuts
* 230pm — 3 scrambled eggs, blueberries
* 415pm — Sliced parmesan cheese, grapes
* 745pm — 8oz filet, veggies (bell peppers, onions)

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None
Peter — None

Notes: If this bet were any longer than a week I’d go broke. Steaks and fruit are expensive — pizza and bagels and boxes of pasta are not. … Went to the gym today for the first time since the bet, felt strong lifting weights but got really tired while playing racquetball. Not sure if that’s related to my new diet. … Hosted a BBQ tonight, but didn’t even get burgers and hot dogs because I didn’t want to be tempted by the bun. It’s embarrassing. … Bales has been drunk for five straight days, no idea how he hasn’t suffered a violation yet. He did admit to almost eating a breakfast sandwich on Day 1. … Peter ate Chipolte with no rice and no corn, the picture is above and it looks disgusting.

DAY 4 Saturday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 149.0 pounds

Food Log:
* 930am — Banana, blueberries, grapes, sliced parmesen cheese
* 1145am — Almond milk protein shake, peanuts
* 230pm — 3 scrambled eggs, blueberries
* 630pm — Tomato Crab soup, salad with grilled chicken

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None
Peter — None

Notes: Drove to Maryland today to meet my Mom for Mother’s Day. Had to explain the bet to her, then proceed to barely be able to eat anything on the menu at the restaurant. Humiliation. … Because of the travel and a non-routine day, I definitely didn’t eat enough. Went to bed hungry like a bad, bad boy.

DAY 5 Sunday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 150.2 pounds

Food Log:
* 10am — Banana, Fruit smoothie with protein added (strawberries, bananas, greek yogurt, almond milk)
* 1230pm — Quiche with bell peppers and onions, strawberries, blueberries
* 230pm — Meat Wraps (deli sliced turkey wrapped in monterey jack cheese)
* 4pm — Grapes, sliced parmesen cheese
* 630pm — Chicken skewers, Thai chicken lettuce wraps, edamame

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None
Peter — None

Notes: Everyone had bagels for Mother’s Day brunch. I was left with unborn chicken babies made into a pie. … Didn’t have time to cook dinner so I resorted to delivery. Went with one of my favorite places in Continental, but couldn’t get anything good on their menu (fried calamari salad, crab pad thai, cheesesteak egg rolls). … Odd that I went up in weight after eating so little on Saturday, but small, short-term fluctuations each way in weight are likely meaningless anyway. It likely stems mostly from water intake and urination frequency.

DAY 6 Monday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 149.6 pounds

Food Log:
* 10am — Banana, blueberries, three eggs scrambled
* 145pm — Almond milk protein shake, peanuts
* 6pm — Meat Wraps (deli sliced turkey wrapped in monterey jack cheese), grapes, blueberries, raw bell peppers

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None
Peter — None

Notes: Got tied up with the big sports betting news today and simply ran out of time. That’s the really bad thing about this bet — I can’t just grab a quick bagel or granola bar or slice of pizza and get going. So I definitely didn’t eat enough today and am starving. Good day to be an animal.

DAY 7 Tuesday
My Weight (stone naked at 8am): 149.2 pounds

Food Log:
* 845am — Banana, orange juice
* 945am — Three eggs scrambled, blueberries
* 145pm — Almond milk protein shake, peanuts
*6pm — Meatballs, shrimp scampi

Violations:
Adam — None
Bales — None
Peter — None

Notes: Got take-out from my favorite restaurant tonight (shout out Dmitris on 3rd and Catherine). I normally eat an obscene amount of pita bread and rice with my meatballs/scampi, but today I couldn’t because of the bet. The meal was about 15 percent less enjoyable, but I feel about 50% afterward. The bloating and tiredness isn’t there.

FINAL THOUGHTS
My weight (stone naked, of course) at 8am Wednesday morning was 148.6 pounds. So in just seven days, I lost 3.6 pounds simply by cutting out starchy carbs. The real reason I know this diet is healthier though is because of my stomach. I don’t want to be too vulgar, but let’s just say my feces have been perfectly formed and there’s barely a need for toilet paper. If that’s not the true definition of health I don’t know what is.

As for the bet, no one violated the terms and therefore no money changed hands. Which is bad for the #content. But we did achieve the real goal of these lifestyle bets, which is to motivate change. We are going to continue the bet in a modified form and I’m already passing on food I would have consumed before. Just this morning I could have had a blueberry muffin and bagel but I declined.

If you want to hear more from the other guys, we talked about it on the latest Three Donkeys Pod.  Thanks for following along on this carnivorous journey.

    I’m 5’9. I had to go on a no carb, sugar, dairy diet for health reasons. Started at 156lbs, 9 months later I was 128.
